If someone had told me years ago that I would become an author, teacher, public speaker and advocate for others navigating trauma and loss, I probably wouldn’t have believed them. Life has a way of taking us down roads we never expected to travel. Looking back, I can clearly see the moments that changed everything for me; those turning points that altered my direction, challenged my resilience and ultimately shaped the person I am today.
Redefining Motherhood Through Love, Loss and Hope
One of the most significant turning points in my life came with the birth, and death, of my first baby.
My daughter, Angelika, was stillborn. In the space of a single moment, my world changed forever. The dreams I had for motherhood, the future I had imagined, and the life I thought I would have, all disappeared in an instant.
What followed was a long and agonising journey. I underwent 36 surgeries, endured 12 failed IVF cycles, and spent countless hours in hospitals. Along the way, I experienced depression; perinatal and postnatal depression, grief and heartbreak that often felt impossible to overcome.
Yet somewhere within that excruciating pain came another turning point.
I realised that healing wasn’t just about surviving my own experiences, it was about using them to help others. My desire to support people facing similar struggles became stronger than my fear of sharing my story.
That journey led me to write and publish my memoir, No One Told Me. It inspired me to volunteer with organisations such as the Gidget Foundation and to share my experiences through newspapers, magazines, radio interviews and public speaking engagements.
The loss of my daughter changed me forever, but it also taught me compassion, empathy and the importance of helping others feel less alone.
The Knock at the Door That Changed Everything
Seven years after welcoming my two sons into the world, another life-changing moment arrived cruelly and without warning.
One day, my husband’s mistress came to my home and told me, in front of my children, that she had been having an affair with my husband. She also revealed that she wasn’t the only woman.
In that moment, everything I believed about my life, about love, my marriage and my future shattered.
The shock was overwhelming, although subconsciously I knew my husband was not a good person and I suspected his infidelity many times… I just didn’t want to believe it. The dreams I had for my family vanished along with any dwindling hope I had clung onto for saving my marriage. But what I discovered in the days that followed was even more devastating.
Bank accounts had been emptied. The mortgage was in crisis. I uncovered evidence of drug use that I had known nothing about. Years of secrecy, manipulation, abuse and gaslighting suddenly began to make sense. The emotional and physical abuse I had endured throughout the relationship was no longer something I could explain away.
I was heartbroken, frightened and uncertain about what sort of future was ahead for my children and I.
Choosing to Rebuild
Do you find that sometimes a turning point isn’t something that happens to you, it’s a decision you make? Other people’s choices can change the course of our lives; but it’s what we choose to do next and how we handle situations, that ultimately matter.
Mine came almost immediately.
I knew I had two choices: allow the circumstances to define us or create a different future for myself and my children.
The years that followed were some of the hardest of my life. I navigated family court proceedings, restraining orders, family violence matters and the emotional aftermath of betrayal and abuse.
At the same time, I was determined that my children would not become defined by what had happened to us.
I returned to work full-time. I purchased a home. I paid for counselling for all three of us. Slowly, step by step, we rebuilt our lives.
It wasn’t easy. There were setbacks, sacrifices and many sleepless nights. But there was also hope.
Today, my eldest son is a third-year apprentice electrician, building a future both he and I are proud of. My youngest son is completing Year 11 and pursuing his own goals and ambitions. Most importantly, we live in a home filled with honesty, safety, stability and love.
We are no longer surviving, we are thriving.
Finding Peace
When people ask me what these experiences taught me, my answer is simple: resilience is not something you’re born with. It’s something you develop when life gives you no other choice.
The challenges I faced shaped me in ways I never expected. They taught me courage, perseverance and the value of finding purpose through adversity.
Today, I continue to share my story because I know there are others walking difficult paths of their own. If my experiences can help even one person feel seen, understood or hopeful, then every challenge has served a purpose.
I’ve created a safe and loving home for myself and my children. I’ve built a meaningful career. I’ve recently found genuine love again with a wonderful man, my partner Emmanuel. But perhaps the greatest gift of all is something I once believed might never be possible.
I have peace.
And that, more than anything, is what every turning point was leading me towards.
Life’s greatest challenges often become our most powerful turning points. Have you ever faced a moment that changed the course of your life, and what did it teach you about your own strength?
