My Husband’s Gambling Addiction Destroyed My Life. Now I’m Helping Other Women Rebuild Theirs.

I never imagined that a family holiday with my husband and our two young sons would mark the beginning of the most difficult period of my life.

During the trip, I noticed my husband repeatedly placing bets during race nights. Something didn’t feel right, a growing sense of unease. At the time, I had no idea he was struggling with a serious gambling addiction, or that our family was already facing a hidden financial crisis.

The holiday was cut short when I received a devastating call: my terminally ill father had been admitted to hospital. On the journey home, I asked my husband to stop at the house to grab a few things.

What I found when I walked through the door changed everything.

A mountain of letters awaited me: credit card statements, overdue notices and final demands from creditors. That evening, after visiting my father in hospital, I sat alone and opened every envelope, one by one. With each letter, the scale of what had been hidden from me became clearer.

When I confronted my husband, he looked at me and said, “I think I’ve got a gambling problem.”

In that moment, my world shifted.

At the same time as trying to process the financial crisis unfolding around me, I was preparing to lose my father. Looking back, I don’t know how I kept going. I was grieving, trying to protect my children, managing work and attempting to make sense of the chaos.

Eventually, my marriage broke down under the strain. What followed was a long and painful divorce involving emergency court hearings after agreements around mortgages and finances repeatedly collapsed. During one hearing, a judge described our case as “a very clear example of what gambling addiction can do to a family.”

Even after the relationship ended, the impact did not disappear. My sons and I faced years of financial uncertainty while trying to rebuild a sense of safety and stability. On the surface, I appeared to be coping. But underneath, I was exhausted, hyper-vigilant and emotionally detached from my own life.

I was constantly waiting for the next crisis.

A knock at the door, an unknown number on my phone, a letter landing on the mat, everything triggered anxiety. Trust had been shattered. My confidence had disappeared. I felt as though I had lost not only my marriage, but my sense of self.

Much later, I was diagnosed with Complex PTSD.

That diagnosis was a huge turning point. For years, I had blamed myself for not coping better. I thought I should have been stronger. Instead, I came to understand that what I had experienced was trauma. The secrecy, deception, financial fear, grief and prolonged uncertainty had left deep emotional scars.

But that diagnosis also marked the beginning of my recovery.

I became determined to understand gambling harm, trauma and emotional recovery more deeply. The more I learned, the more I realised that while support existed for people with gambling addictions, very little was available for those of us living with the consequences of someone else’s addiction.

The partners. The parents. The children.

The people left carrying the fallout.

That realisation led me to retrain around addiction therapy. What began as a search for answers became a new purpose. Along the way I met Claire Jones, another therapist whose life had also been affected by someone else’s gambling addiction. We quickly realised we shared the same passion: helping the people who are so often overlooked.

Together, we founded Gambling Recovery for All CIC and Gambling Recovery Therapy.

Today, we support both gamblers and affected others, combining professional expertise with lived experience. We have met countless women who are quietly struggling behind closed doors. Women checking bank accounts late at night. Women living with fear, anxiety and financial uncertainty. Women showing clear signs of trauma without even recognising it.

I know because I was one of them.

My experience nearly broke me, but it also gave me a purpose I never expected. Today I use both my professional training and lived experience to help others understand that they are not alone, or to blame, and recovery is possible.

If you are a UK-based woman whose life has been affected by a partner, spouse, family member or loved one’s gambling, I want you to know that support is available. Through our fully funded 12-week trauma-informed programme, Rebuild and Rise: Reclaim Your Life, we help women regain confidence, stability and emotional wellbeing in a safe and supportive environment.

You do not have to carry this alone. There is help available, and there is a way forward.

Such an inspiring story. I can’t imagine how tough it must have been for you to make that discovery. It goes to show that even when things seem unimaginably hard, with the right help and mindset, you can not only get over something but also come back better and stronger.

I have a friend who has experienced this and it nearly broke her. She lost everything and felt too ashamed to share this with friends and her family until years later. Such an inspiring story and it’s good to know that there is growing support for this issue.Well done ladies

Such an inspirational story Lorraine, so often we don’t think about those people surrounding the addict and the impact it has on them. They’re just left to pick up the pieces themselves. Hats off to both your and your business partner for setting up your venture. They say the best therapy is to help others, so this will be a win-win for everyone!

Thank you for sharing your story so openly. Too often the focus is solely on the person with the addiction, while those living with the consequences are left to cope in silence. Your honesty gives a voice to so many affected others and offers hope that support, understanding and recovery are possible.
