✦   ✦   ✦

ReaderWrites is a community storytelling project run by Transform Reads. Together, we are writing a real book — one passage at a time. These terms exist to protect both you and us, and to make sure everyone who contributes understands exactly what they are signing up for. We have tried to write them in plain English.

— The Transform Reads Team

I

What ReaderWrites Is

ReaderWrites is a collaborative fiction project hosted on the Transform Reads website. An opening passage is written by the Transform Reads editorial team, and members of the public are then invited to submit short continuation passages — typically 50 to 200 words — to move the story forward.

Approved contributions are published on the website as part of the growing story. When the story reaches completion, the full text — including all approved contributions — will be compiled into a book, which Transform Reads intends to publish in digital and/or print form.

Participation in ReaderWrites is entirely voluntary and free of charge.

II

Who Can Contribute

To submit a contribution you must be aged 18 or over, or have the permission of a parent or legal guardian. You must have a registered account on the Transform Reads website. By submitting, you confirm that you have read and agree to these terms in full.

If you are contributing on behalf of a third party, or if your contribution is based on pre-existing work you did not create yourself, you must tell us before submitting. Contributions of this kind will not be accepted.

III

Originality & Copyright

Every contribution you submit must be entirely your own original work, written specifically for this project. By submitting, you confirm and warrant that:

  • The contribution was written by you and you alone, during or after your registration on this site.
  • It does not reproduce, paraphrase, or closely imitate any existing published or unpublished work by another author, including books, websites, social media posts, song lyrics, or AI-generated text.
  • It does not infringe the copyright, trademark, privacy, or any other rights of any third party.
  • It was not produced using AI writing tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar). We want real human creativity.
  • It is your own genuine creative response to the story as it stands at the time of submission.

Important

Submitting plagiarised, copied, or AI-generated content is a breach of these terms and may result in your account being suspended. If a published contribution is later found to infringe a third party’s copyright, you will be solely responsible for any resulting claims or costs.

IV

The Licence You Grant Us

By submitting a contribution and ticking the consent checkbox on the submission form, you grant Transform Reads a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual licence to use your contribution in the following ways:

  • Publishing it on the Transform Reads website as part of the live story.
  • Including it in a compiled book based on the ReaderWrites story, in digital formats (e.g. ebook, PDF) and/or print.
  • Editing, abridging, or lightly reformatting your contribution for style, continuity, or length — while preserving its essential character.
  • Using your contribution in marketing materials, social media posts, press coverage, and promotional content related to the ReaderWrites project.
  • Translating or adapting the compiled work for other markets or formats in the future.
📖

In plain English

You keep ownership of what you wrote. You are simply giving us permission to use it as part of this project — on the website, in the book, and to tell people about it. We cannot sell your words separately or use them for something entirely unrelated to ReaderWrites.

This licence does not transfer ownership of your work to Transform Reads. You remain the author and copyright holder of your individual contribution.

V

No Royalties or Payment

ReaderWrites is a community project. Contributors will not receive any financial payment, royalty, share of revenue, or other monetary compensation in connection with their contribution — whether it is published on the website, included in a compiled book, or used in any other format.

This applies regardless of whether Transform Reads generates income from the book or any related product. By submitting a contribution, you acknowledge this explicitly and waive any claim to financial compensation.

💡

Why we state this clearly

We know this feels like a formal thing to say. But writing communities have occasionally seen disputes where contributors later claimed they expected payment. We want everyone to be clear from the outset: the reward here is creative participation, community recognition, and your name in a real published book — not money.

What contributors do receive: credit by name in the published work, a contributor badge on their ReaderWrites profile, recognition on the community leaderboard, and the satisfaction of having helped write a real book alongside fellow readers.

VI

Moral Rights & Credit

Transform Reads respects the creative efforts of all contributors. Where a contribution is approved and published, the contributor’s display name will appear alongside their passage on the website and in the credits section of any compiled book.

However, given the collaborative and editorial nature of the project, contributors agree to the following:

  • The final compiled book will be presented as a Transform Reads community work, not as a traditional sole-authored or co-authored publication.
  • Minor editorial changes to your contribution (spelling, punctuation, tense consistency) may be made without seeking your specific approval each time.
  • You will not be listed as a co-author, co-publisher, or rights holder of the compiled work as a whole.
  • If a contribution is rejected, it will not be published and will not appear in the book. We are not obliged to explain individual editorial decisions.

VII

Moderation & Editorial Control

Transform Reads retains full editorial control over the ReaderWrites project at all times. Submission of a contribution does not guarantee publication. Every submission is reviewed before it is approved.

We may reject a contribution for any reason, including — but not limited to — quality, continuity with the story, tone, content concerns, or because a different submission was selected for that point in the story. Rejection does not reflect on your worth as a writer.

We reserve the right to remove a previously approved contribution from the website or compiled work if we subsequently discover it infringes third-party rights, violates our content standards, or if the contributor is found to have misrepresented the originality of their work.

Transform Reads also reserves the right to pause, restart, or discontinue the ReaderWrites project at any time, for any reason, without liability to contributors.

VIII

What We May Do With the Book

Once the story is complete, Transform Reads intends to publish the compiled work. We have not made any specific commitments about the format, price, distribution, or timeline of that publication, and we are not obliged to publish it at all.

  • The book may be made available free of charge, sold, or distributed as a promotional item — at our discretion.
  • It may be published in digital formats (PDF, EPUB, Kindle), in print, or both.
  • Transform Reads will retain all publishing rights to the compiled work as a whole.
  • Contributors will not receive a share of any income generated by the compiled work.
📚

In plain English

We will do our best to produce something the whole community is proud of. Contributors will be credited and will receive a copy of the finished book. Beyond that, commercial decisions rest with Transform Reads.

IX

Content Standards

Contributions must be suitable for a general adult readership. The following will result in immediate rejection and may result in account suspension:

  • Sexually explicit content or material that sexualises minors in any way.
  • Content that incites hatred, discrimination, or violence against any individual or group.
  • Defamatory statements about real individuals or organisations.
  • Content that promotes or glorifies self-harm, suicide, or dangerous behaviour.
  • Spam, promotional content, or links to external websites.
  • Content that has nothing to do with the story as it stands — random, incoherent, or deliberately disruptive submissions.

Mature themes handled thoughtfully are acceptable, provided they serve the story and respect the spirit of the project. When in doubt, write with the care you would want a fellow reader to show your work.

X

Your Agreement

By ticking the consent checkbox on the submission form and clicking Submit, you confirm that:

  • You have read and understood these Contributor Terms in full.
  • You are 18 or over (or have appropriate parental consent).
  • Your contribution is entirely your own original work.
  • You grant Transform Reads the licence described in Section IV.
  • You understand and accept that no payment or royalty will be made to you.
  • You accept Transform Reads’ full editorial control over the project.

Questions or concerns?
